Just as interesting when I read it sixty years ago as now. A good reminder that sometimes original thought remains original over time.Product details

The Waning of the Middle Ages Paperback Johan H Huizinga Books Reviews
You have asked me to review a classic. You might as well have asked me to review the bible or Shakespeare's plays. I purchased this book because I was unable to locate the volume that I keep in my personal library.I needed it as a reference for a paper on "Thomas Cole - Working in the Shadows of the Renaissance" that I will be presenting in Florence, Italy in May. I first read this book in 1945, when it was assigned as a part of a course in the "Renaissance and Reformation" that I took while I was an undergraduate at Princeton. Huizinga's "The Waning of the Middle Ages" replaces the idea that the Middle Ages ended with a door slam, with evidence that its ending was gradual and traceable. The book is a necessary component in the library of every scholar of history. See also Huizinga "Homo Ludens".
I bought this because I wore my previous copy out.
It is a must have when traveling in Europe, but it is invaluable while reading other histories, as it carries so much of the layering of attitudes, behavior, invention of rules and manners.
Anyone who loves history will love this book. It is written and translated in a clear and concise manner from beginning to end. This is important to me, as I find that many books of this type will kind of peter out at the end, as if the author tired of the subject.
The best example of this is a book which should be fascinating from beginning to end, "Life in a World Lit Only by Fire". It starts out just great, but then gets less and less imformative.
Great book. On time. In good shape
HISTORY AT ITS BEST THANKS
I read Huizingas literary and historical masterpiece years ago, and have a worn out paperback copy which I adore.
On impulse I purchased it for my kindle which is essentially crowded with thrillers and detective fiction for travel.
I enjoy the feeling that I can flip open the book and read some of my favourite lines.
A classic. I read parts of it in college. Reading it again was like meeting up with an old friend.
Over year I've bought this book four times. The book is great, but what does this say about me.
Just as interesting when I read it sixty years ago as now. A good reminder that sometimes original thought remains original over time.
