Is He Popenjoy? edition by Anthony Trollope Reference eBooks

This is one of Trollope's few really funny novels. Lord George Germain has married Mary Lovelace, the only daughter of the Dean of the cathedral of Brotherton. Lord George has practically no money, and he is unhappy about living on the wealth of his wife. Mary wants a reasonable measure of freedom in her married life, but she is held back by the belief that she has to submit to her husband in everything. Then two things happen: George's older brother, the Marquis of Brotherton, returns to England with a child who is supposed to be his heir, Lord Popenjoy, and Mary discovers a letter that puts her husband at her mercy. From then on, things are very funny indeed. If you have read other Trollope novels, you will enjoy this one, and if you are a Trollope newbie, this novel is lighter and more approachable than some of the famous ones, which makes it a good place to start. I recommend it highly.

Is He Popenjoy? edition by Anthony Trollope Reference eBooks Reviews

Like most of Trollope's novels, the description of characters is the strongest point. The best of them have faults, and the worst of them have virtues, and the the gentle satire is always amusing.

The question posed by the title consumes some of the characters throughout the book, but it's not at all the point of the story.

I wouldn't rank this as one of Trollope's very best novels, but it's up there in the top tier.
Anthony Trollope is my favorite author, and I was so happy when made this novel available. It has not been in print lately, and this version was obviously an on demand one, not one issued by a publishing company. I prefer the Oxford World Classic editions for the excellent foot notes and biography of the author they provide. But this book was not available in that format. But I am happy to be able to read the text at all.
This novel (surely one of the more memorably titled in English fiction) presents a fine cast of characters, led by one of Trollope's splendid worldly clergymen. The Dean, who evokes fond memories of Archdeacon Grantley in the Barsetshire novels, is an unflagging promoter of his daughter's interests. And well he should be, as she has married into one of the most dysfunctional noble families in England. The villainous Marquis, the honorable but weak Lord George, the redoubtable Lady Sarah--you will treasure them all. A fine plot. Trollope's satirical treatment of female lecturers for women's rights is fairly broad, but he makes clear that his sympathies lie with Lady George, not with her husband, when Lord George forgets himself with a malicious adventuress. Read and savor.
Spoiler Alert!!! You can see that Hollywood in the 30's and probably Georgette Heyer, read and borrowed from Trollope's books, especially this one. It's a jolly nice society romance novel, Trollope light, I'd call it, so don't worry, they'll be no Lily Dales in this one, happy endings all 'round!
After Wilkie Collins and Jane Austen I was searching for another Victorian Style writer and Trollope fit the situation. As it turned out Trollope is a master of creating personalities similar to the others. In Popenjoy you get to intimately know the characters personality but you never know specifically what turns the events will take. This makes a very engaging story and by all accounts ranks Trollope at a high level of great English Authors. I don't discuss the plot of any novels in detail but rest assured you will enjoy, dislike, love and critical of all the leading characters of Popenjoy. Involved are families, friends and enemies of aristocratic English society that include jealousy, affairs, in-laws, and romance in a thoroughly creative manner. Probably should be 4 and a half stars...
“Is He Popenjoy?” captured my attention as I followed the adventures of young Mary, her devoted father the Dean, bachelor Lord George, his nasty older brother the Marquis, and a host of other interesting people in the countryside around London in the 1870s. The unpleasant Marquis upsets his family when he suddenly demands they all move out of the family home and away from the area. The Marquis has lived a self indulgent life in Italy and brings home a wife and a baby, who may be heir to the estate. Mary and Lord George marry and have to overcome bumps in their first months of marriage, while a legal battle ensues over whether the Marquis’ baby is the legitimate heir. This novel is altogether a delight to read.
Popenjoy shares several of the same themes Trollope covered in "He Knew He was Right" but in a much lighter way, thanks goodness, which makes for much more enjoyment. It's the story of a young couple at the beginning of heir marriage. They have their share of rough edges to file down one to the other. Lord George, as a second son, is not on the best terms with the Marquis who his himself is none of too easy to get onwith with foreign wife and its mysterious circumstances.

A delightful character, the Dean of the local parish, is Lady Mary's devoted father who is liberal with his money but expects to get full value for his largese. Of course Mary loves and respects her father but to the same or maybe higher degree she feels for her husband? I know these situations are serious but Trollope skates around them with his traditional humor so the angst level is comfortable to the reader.
